Chapter 2
Three years later

It was three years since you had been banished to the Moors, and you and Raven had become good friends. You had attempted to name him, but nothing really fit. So you called him Raven. He often showed himself, especially when you were lonely. You admired his lovely dark glossy feathers and shining brown-orange eyes. Occasionally, he would let you pet him, most times it was when you were down after a verbal beating from the faeries. If anything, they had gotten worse since she had first come.
Now that darkness had shrouded the Moors, the faeries had become used to the dark and were no longer afraid of you. On one occasion, instead of just verbally abusing you, six small pixies had gathered around you in a circle and started to snap at you and hit you with their tiny hands and pull your hair. You had lashed out accidently and a tiny black tendrils gripped onto the lead faerie’s leg, slowly making its way up. She shrieked and tried to shake it off. Once you realized what you were doing you narrowed your eyes and, using the shadow, pulled the faerie who was soon to drown in shadow closer to you.
Your skin had turned black and shadow wisps floated around your form like little smoky flames. “Leave. Me. Alone,” you had said, beyond darkly, to the now quivering little pixie. You then released her and she fluttered away, you took a half-step toward the six of them and the shrieked and zoomed away. You sucked in a breath and teleported away.
That had been just a few days ago, and just when you had wanted Raven to be with you so much, he just wasn’t there. You had never intended to frighten the pixies, you just wanted them to leave you alone and stop bullying you. So you had sat in your tree with your knees drawn up to your chest as you just replayed the scene in your head over and over.
Finally, you heard the familiar squawk that signaled your friend’s arrival. You stood and walked out of your tree. He swooped around you in a circle a few times and you swiped at him and tried to catch him. You laughed as he dodged and spun to keep out of your reach. He landed on a tree branch just out of jumping reach and cawed at you.
You smirked and tilted your head, looking up at him you put your hands on your hips, and said, “Well then come down. You know I can’t climb.” He seemed to smirk down at you and then he swooped down from the branch onto your shoulder. You laughed as he grabbed your shoulder and tried to turn you. “Alright, alright, I’m turning! Cut it out, Raven,” you laughed. Your laughter stopped immediately when you saw what he wanted you to see.
Maleficent.
Raven flew from your shoulder and landed on her staff and she stroked his back feathers. You sort of felt a bit betrayed because Raven was supposed to be your friend. You wanted to run, but you were frozen in place. Maleficent drew her eyes away from Raven to you and said, “You must be the one that I have heard so much about from the pixies.” She started to walk closer to you. “What is your name girl?” she asked. You finally went into motion and did the only thing you knew how. You teleported.
Or you tried to. You were stopped by a brilliant green light the formed around you and caused you to freeze. She walked closer to you and looked you up and down. “Now, I do not like repeating myself, but I will ask you again. What is your name?” she asked. “(Y-y/n) milady,” you said. “It is a lovely name. One of the humans, I believe. How did a human like yourself find yourself in the Moors?” she asked. “I-I was cursed,” you said nervously.
“Well, it’s a plausible reason. I assume that the previous king had you banished from their little kingdom,” she said. The light faded, but you didn’t feel like you needed to run anymore. You pushed a strand of black hair behind your ear and kept your eyes on her. Out of the corner of your eye, you saw Raven looking between you and the Dark Queen.
“Would you like to have a job in exchange for the faeries respect and privacy from them?” she asked. You thought about it for a moment and nodded. “What do you want me to do?” you asked. “I want you to be my ears in the castle. You can get closer than my wings and the two of you can work together to learn things,” she said. You looked at Raven who was fluttering around Maleficent’s head. “What is his name? I have been calling him Raven, but I’m sure that he has a different name. Doesn’t he?” you asked.
“Yes, he does,” she said, “This is Diaval.” she said, turning her head. “Into a man,” she said. Instanly, in the place of a wildly flapping raven, was a handsome dark-haired young man. You were thankful he was wearing clothes. He nodded at you. “Nice to meet you, officially. I can’t actually speak when I’m a bird and you’re not,” he said. You nodded and said, “It’s nice to officially meet you too”
He smiled and you noticed the partial scars on his neck and face. Like he had been in a fight, long ago. “Well, we need you to have a way to show the faeries that you are in my employ. Here you are,” she said. Another flash of green came from around your throat and a small silver necklace with a pendant that was an outline of a flame that had streaks of emerald running through it appeared around your neck.
You reached up and touched it. “Now, my ears and wings, go. Learn what you can, and return to me.” You and Diaval nodded. “Yes, milady,” you said, curtseying. “Yes, Mistress,” Diaval said, bowing. Then he turned into a raven once again and flew off through the trees. You disappeared in a poof of shadow smoke off to wherever you and Diaval were going.
